Thailand has raised alarms over China’s recent delivery of military tanks to Cambodia, expressing concerns that the move might jeopardize the delicate ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia established after last year’s violent border confrontations. The issue was brought to light by Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul during a recent meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping, as confirmed by Thailand’s foreign ministry. The Thai officials indicated that the timing and manner of the military delivery could exacerbate the already tense relations between the two Southeast Asian nations, despite several ceasefire agreements in place.
The shipment to Cambodia comprised 39 Chinese-manufactured T-59D battle tanks, provided under an existing military cooperation agreement. However, Thai authorities have clarified that there is no evidence suggesting the tanks have been positioned near the contested border area. The relationship between Thailand and Cambodia remains fragile, strained by disputes over land and maritime boundaries, which are rooted in historical colonial-era treaties and maps that continue to challenge diplomatic negotiations.
China has defended its defense cooperation with both countries as standard practice, asserting that it does not target any third party. This year, in addition to the tanks, China also supplied Cambodia with a Type 056 guided-missile corvette. Thai officials have expressed gratitude for China’s neutral approach and its efforts to mitigate regional tensions, while underscoring that the resolution of the dispute ultimately lies in direct dialogue between Thailand and Cambodia.
Beyond addressing the border issues, Thailand and China have agreed to create a new dialogue mechanism involving their foreign and defense ministers. This initiative aims to foster communication and cooperation, with the first round of talks set to tackle the problem of cross-border scam operations. This collaborative effort highlights the commitment of both nations to address broader regional challenges while maintaining stability and peace along their shared borders.
