In a significant diplomatic meeting in Hà Nội on September 5, Vietnamese Prime Minister Lê Minh Hưng and Myanmar President Min Aung Hlaing committed to enhancing bilateral relations and expanding cooperation across various sectors. This marked Min Aung Hlaing’s first official visit to Vietnam in his new capacity. Prime Minister Hưng expressed Vietnam’s support for Myanmar’s pursuit of stability, reconciliation, dialogue, and economic growth, emphasizing the importance of strengthening ties between the two nations.
Praising Vietnam’s socio-economic progress and its increasing influence on both regional and international stages, President Min Aung Hlaing expressed a keen interest in drawing from Vietnam’s development experiences. He reiterated Myanmar’s dedication to maintaining its longstanding friendship and broad cooperation with Vietnam. The leaders acknowledged the recent advancements in their bilateral relationship and agreed on the need to enhance high-level exchanges and foster political trust. They called for the reactivation of key cooperation mechanisms focusing on trade, security, and defense.
Defense and security cooperation emerged as a cornerstone of the discussions, with both countries aiming to address issues such as cross-border crime, cybercrime, online fraud, and drug trafficking. Plans to expand military training, young officer exchanges, and collaboration on non-traditional security challenges were also highlighted as essential components of this partnership. The talks also placed a substantial focus on economic ties, with both sides exploring strategies to boost trade and update existing agreements related to trade, investment, and customs. Myanmar showed interest in attracting Vietnamese investments in sectors such as telecommunications, digital transformation, high-tech agriculture, aquaculture, food processing, irrigation, and infrastructure.
Discussions extended to improving infrastructure and air connectivity, with particular emphasis on restoring direct flights and developing joint tourism initiatives, including spiritual and medical tourism. On the regional front, Vietnam affirmed its commitment to working alongside ASEAN members to sustain dialogue and constructive engagement with Myanmar, while both parties advocated for the peaceful resolution of disputes in alignment with international law.
In a gesture of continued cooperation, Prime Minister Hưng extended an invitation to President Min Aung Hlaing to attend the CLMV Summit and chair the ACMECS Summit scheduled in Hà Nội in November 2026. In return, President Min Aung Hlaing invited Prime Minister Hưng to visit Myanmar at a mutually convenient time, further solidifying the intent to strengthen their bilateral relations.
