Indonesia has urged for a credible and transparent process in selecting the next United Nations Secretary-General, highlighting the need for a leader who can enhance multilateral cooperation in the face of global tensions. This call comes as the country closely observes the selection process, which remains ongoing after the seventh round of informal voting at the UN Security Council on October 30.

Stressing adherence to the UN Charter and the principles of international cooperation, Indonesia emphasized the importance of a selection process that is impartial and inclusive. The country also noted the candidacy of Lana Nusseibeh, nominated by the United Arab Emirates, as part of the ongoing race. Indonesia underscored that the next Secretary-General must have the ability to unite nations, respect international law, and advance necessary reforms within the United Nations.

In its statement, Jakarta highlighted the critical need for developing countries to have a stronger voice in global decision-making, ensuring the UN continues to deliver meaningful outcomes for its member states. The selection process currently involves several candidates, including Rebeca Grynspan, former vice president of Costa Rica and head of the UN Conference on Trade and Development, and Rafael Grossi, director general of the International Atomic Energy Agency. Turkey has also put forth Feridun Sinirlioglu, Secretary-General of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, for consideration.

With the current UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres set to complete his term at the end of 2026, the selection of his successor remains a pivotal issue. The new Secretary-General is expected to assume office on January 1, 2027, amid expectations of guiding the UN through ongoing and emerging global challenges.
