Malaysia is set to address the Myanmar refugee situation with a focus on national security and the welfare of its citizens, as stated by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. The government is collaborating with Myanmar on a plan for the voluntary and phased repatriation of refugees, while enhancing enforcement and inter-agency coordination.
In discussions between the two nations, an agreement was reached to repatriate 5,000 Myanmar refugees in stages. The first phase targets 1,476 refugees, who have already embarked on the repatriation process after fulfilling the agreed-upon procedures.
Prime Minister Anwar acknowledged the refugee issue as a significant challenge that affects Malaysia’s security, social services, and administrative systems. He emphasized that while the government will adhere to national laws, humanitarian considerations will also be taken into account.
The Malaysian government’s approach underscores its intent to balance domestic concerns with compassion in handling the refugee crisis. This initiative marks a step towards alleviating the pressures faced by Malaysia due to the longstanding refugee situation.
