Indonesia has taken a significant step in advancing global artificial intelligence cooperation by becoming a founding member of the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO). This move was highlighted during discussions between Indonesia’s Coordinating Economic Affairs Minister Airlangga Hartarto and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. Hartarto emphasized Indonesia’s dedication to establishing an AI governance framework that prioritizes equitable development, human-centered innovation, national sovereignty, inclusive multilateralism, and adherence to United Nations principles.
In addition to joining WAICO, Indonesia has expressed interest in securing a senior position within the organization’s secretariat. The country is also keen on enhancing collaboration with China, particularly in the fields of artificial intelligence, investment, and trade. Hartarto advocated for expedited market access for Indonesian exports and encouraged Chinese companies to increase their investments in advanced manufacturing, the digital economy, and industrial parks within Indonesia.
Further strengthening bilateral ties, Indonesia reiterated its support for China’s upcoming chairmanship of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) in 2026. Hartarto proposed the idea of a bilateral business summit, coinciding with a scheduled meeting between Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto and Chinese President Xi Jinping, aimed at fostering deeper economic cooperation between the two nations.
These initiatives underscore Indonesia’s commitment to playing an active role in shaping the future of AI governance on a global scale while simultaneously seeking to boost its own economic growth through strategic partnerships and enhanced regional cooperation.
