UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza as the third anniversary of the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel approaches. In his plea, Guterres emphasized the need for both parties to pursue a sustainable political solution, increase humanitarian aid, and adhere to international law.
Guterres condemned the attack by Hamas, which resulted in the deaths of over 1,200 Israelis and foreign nationals and led to 251 hostages being taken. Simultaneously, he drew attention to the significant loss of life and the displacement and destruction faced by Palestinians in Gaza. According to Gaza health authorities, more than 74,200 Palestinians have been killed during Israel’s military operations in the region.
The UN chief noted that a ceasefire declared in October 2025 had brought some relief but had yet to achieve enduring security, adequate humanitarian support, or a credible pathway to recovery and peace. He urged a renewed commitment to ending the suffering on both sides, emphasizing the importance of creating conditions where Israelis and Palestinians can live securely, with dignity and rights protected.
