Moscow has recalled its ambassador to the United Kingdom, Andrey Kelin, after a seven-year tenure, amid escalating tensions between Russia and the UK over the latter’s support for Ukraine. The Russian embassy announced that Kelin’s diplomatic duties concluded on July 21, and as of now, no successor has been named. Vasily A. Tsyganov, the embassy’s chargé d’affaires, currently stands as the senior Russian diplomat in the UK.
This development occurs against the backdrop of increasing friction between the two nations, primarily due to Britain’s military assistance to Ukraine. Recently, Russia issued a warning to Britain, indicating potential “consequences” following reports that British-made attack drones were being provided to Ukraine for operations against Russian targets.
The Kremlin has criticized the UK for what it describes as a confrontational stance, while the British government has consistently reiterated its support for Ukraine, asserting the nation’s right to defend itself against Russian aggression. This diplomatic change raises questions about Moscow’s intentions regarding its level of engagement with Britain moving forward.
Despite these concerns, the Russian embassy has stated that the withdrawal of Kelin should not be interpreted as a step towards formally downgrading diplomatic relations with the UK.
