WhatsApp is introducing a new feature that allows users to communicate without sharing their phone numbers, as it begins rolling out a username reservation system. This privacy-oriented update is set to be available worldwide later this year. Users now have the opportunity to reserve a unique username in advance of the full feature’s activation, which will allow them to share a username instead of a phone number when initiating new conversations.
To access this feature, users need to update their WhatsApp app and navigate to Settings, then Account, and select Username. Notifications will alert users when this option becomes available in their respective regions. Unlike traditional social media platforms, WhatsApp will not be offering a public search directory for usernames. Instead, only individuals who know the exact username will be able to initiate contact, thereby minimizing the risk of spam and unwanted messages.
WhatsApp is also introducing an optional username key, which users can distribute for added control over who can start conversations with them. Although usernames will be available, they are not mandatory, and users can continue to use their phone numbers if they prefer.
This update is particularly beneficial for creators, businesses, and organizations that wish to maintain consistent identities across services provided by Meta Platforms. It also opens up the possibility for users to secure matching usernames across multiple platforms where this feature is available.
