Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim commenced a three-day working visit to China on Tuesday, focusing on bolstering bilateral relations and enhancing trade cooperation. The visit includes stops in Shanghai and Hangzhou, where Anwar, who also serves as Malaysia’s finance minister, will engage in discussions with Chinese leaders and participate in international conferences.
During his stay in Shanghai, Prime Minister Anwar is scheduled to deliver a keynote address at the WorldSkills Conference, an event tied to the upcoming WorldSkills Shanghai 2026. His itinerary also includes participation in the Fifth Global Digital Trade Expo in Hangzhou, where Malaysia is a Guest Country of Honour. These engagements underscore the focus on artificial intelligence, digital trade, and international collaboration.
On Thursday, Anwar will hold a high-level meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang in Hangzhou, aiming to deepen the economic and technological ties between the two nations. Malaysia has maintained a robust trade relationship with China, its largest trading partner for 17 consecutive years. From January to August this year, bilateral trade between the countries reached a substantial US$113.82 billion.
In addition to official meetings, Prime Minister Anwar is expected to meet with leaders in China’s business and technology sectors. These interactions are aimed at attracting foreign investment into Malaysia, fostering growth in emerging technologies and strengthening economic partnerships.
