Mark Rydell, celebrated for his Oscar-nominated directorial work on the film “On Golden Pond,” has passed away at the age of 97. His death was due to natural causes, occurring at a retirement community for entertainment professionals located in Woodland Hills, Los Angeles. Rydell’s career was marked by his ability to bring together cinematic legends, a talent most notably showcased in the 1981 film “On Golden Pond,” which starred Henry Fonda, Katharine Hepburn, and Jane Fonda. The movie garnered 10 Oscar nominations and earned acting awards for both Henry Fonda and Hepburn, although Rydell himself lost the Best Director award to Warren Beatty for “Reds.”

The success of “On Golden Pond” was not just critical but also commercial, with the film earning over $119 million globally. It holds particular significance as Henry Fonda’s final film role, which also brought him his only Oscar win.
