Heavy rainfall overnight has led to significant flooding and landslides in Cilacap District, Central Java, Indonesia. In response, local authorities have initiated emergency operations to address the impact on several villages across the district.
The Cilacap Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) reported ongoing flooding as of 8 a.m. Saturday, particularly affecting the Maos and Kroya sub-districts. Residential areas, agricultural land, and roads in these areas have been inundated. In Mrenek Village, Maos, floodwaters reached depths ranging from 10 to 20 centimeters, while Karangreja Village experienced flooding up to 50 centimeters. Although no evacuations have been ordered, preparations for a public kitchen are underway at the village hall to assist residents should conditions worsen.
In the Kroya sub-district, Mujur Lor and Sikampuh villages also reported flooding, with water levels around 20 centimeters impacting homes, shops, and a mosque. Authorities are seeking heavy equipment to remove water hyacinth obstructing a tributary of the Silunjar River, as this blockage could exacerbate flooding risks.
Flooding has also been reported in Cilibang Village, Jeruklegi, where water has covered agricultural land and reached a main road, which remains passable for vehicles. Meanwhile, a landslide in Mandala Village, Jeruklegi, has prompted emergency operations by local authorities and disaster response teams to clear debris.
The BPBD is actively monitoring the affected areas and coordinating with local authorities and relevant agencies to manage the situation and mitigate further damage. The agency continues to assess the situation as efforts to restore normalcy are underway.
