Malaysia is setting its sights on securing a total of 33 medals at the Aichi-Nagoya 2026 Asian Games, scheduled to occur from September 19 to October 4. The national team aims to capture six gold, seven silver, and 20 bronze medals. Chef de Mission Mohd Sumali Reduan expressed confidence in these objectives, citing the current form and recent performances of Malaysian athletes, along with their medal-winning potential amidst strong competition from across Asia.
The pursuit of medals will be concentrated across 13 sports identified for their potential to yield success. These sports include track cycling, badminton, archery, diving, squash, sepak takraw, hockey, athletics, sailing, karate, wushu, esports, and shooting. Malaysia’s contingent consists of 352 athletes accompanied by 185 officials, set to compete in 30 out of the 43 available sports, spanning 156 of the 469 events at the Games.
In a symbolic gesture of national pride, wushu athlete Tan Cheong Min has been chosen to carry the Malaysian flag at the Asian Games. Meanwhile, track cycling standout Azizulhasni Awang is among the athletes anticipated to play a significant role in achieving the nation’s medal goals. Both athletes are expected to contribute prominently to Malaysia’s overall performance.
Alongside the main Asian Games, Malaysia is also preparing for the Asian Para Games, which will take place from October 18 to 24. The Para Games team has its own ambitious targets, aiming for six gold, 10 silver, and 18 bronze medals. These efforts reflect Malaysia’s commitment to showcasing and enhancing its sporting prowess on the Asian stage.
