While we plan for comfort and fun, the ultimate priority during travel is safety. The single most important safety net you can provide for your pet is clear and comprehensive identification. In an unfamiliar place, it can mean the difference between a scare and a tragedy.
The first layer is the physical tag. Your pet should wear a well-fitted collar or harness with an ID tag at all times. This tag must be legible and contain, at minimum, your pet’s name and your mobile phone number. For travel, it’s wise to add a second temporary tag with the address and phone number of your destination.
The second layer is the microchip. A microchip is a permanent form of identification that can’t fall off or become unreadable. However, a microchip is only as good as the information it’s linked to. Before you travel, log in to the microchip registry’s website and ensure your contact details, including your mobile number, are up to date.
The third layer is preparedness. Keep a recent, clear photo of your pet on your phone. If they do get lost, you’ll have it ready to share immediately. Having these layers of identification in place provides peace of mind, allowing you to relax and enjoy the trip knowing you’ve taken the most important step to ensure their safety.
