Relegation from the Championship now looks like a certainty for Sheffield Wednesday after an automatic 12-point deduction left them 15 points adrift of safety. The club, now on -6 points, was placed into administration by owner Dejphon Chansiri.
The financial collapse follows months of turmoil, including unpaid wages in five of the last seven months and a $pounds{}$1 million tax bill. The instability led to the departure of former manager Danny Röhl and key players, leaving the squad depleted.
While the sporting penalty is devastating, fans are celebrating the end of Chansiri’s reign. The Supporters Trust said it was “overjoyed” by his exit, blaming his “financial mismanagement” for the crisis. Seats with his name were quickly removed from Hillsborough.
Manager Henrik Pedersen, however, is refusing to give up. “I have a big belief we can survive in the Championship,” he stated, calling the administration a necessary “fresh restart.”
The club is now in the hands of administrator Begbies Traynor, who will market the club and stadium as a package to new buyers. The administrator’s immediate goal is to “protect the interests of creditors.”
