Vietnam and Malaysia are strengthening their defence cooperation in a bid to bolster bilateral relations and enhance regional stability. This development follows discussions in Hanoi between Vietnam’s Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister General Phan Văn Giang and Malaysia’s outgoing Ambassador Dato’ Tan Yang Thai. During their meeting, Giang commended the ambassador for his efforts in advancing the collaborative ties between the two nations.
The talks highlighted significant strides made in defence relations, such as consistent military exchanges, policy dialogues, training initiatives, and joint participation in international and multilateral forums. Both parties expressed a mutual interest in continuing these efforts and building upon existing agreements. Giang emphasized the importance of high-level meetings and more robust engagement through established defence cooperation mechanisms.
In a gesture of goodwill and collaboration, Giang extended an invitation to Malaysia’s defence leaders and companies to attend the Vietnam International Defence Expo 2026, set to take place in Hanoi. This invitation underscores Vietnam’s commitment to deepening defence ties and exploring further opportunities for collaboration with Malaysia.
Ambassador Dato’ Tan Yang Thai reciprocated the sentiment by expressing gratitude towards Vietnam’s defence ministry and military for their support during his tenure. He voiced optimism about the future of defence relations between the two countries, noting that continued cooperation would contribute to peace and prosperity within the region.
As Vietnam and Malaysia look to the future, both nations remain committed to fostering a strong and collaborative defence partnership. This alliance not only aims to enhance bilateral ties but also plays a crucial role in promoting stability and security across Southeast Asia.
